The stator on Harley Big Twins lives inside the primary chaincase and requires primary disassembly to access. The voltage regulator is typically accessible on the frame, but wiring connections must be clean and tight to prevent recurrence.
Stator Replacement — What's Involved
- Primary oil drain
- Outer primary cover removal
- Stator wiring unplugged from regulator
- Stator unbolt from inner primary and replaced with new unit
- Wiring routed correctly to prevent chafing
- Primary reassembled with fresh oil
- Output verified after replacement
Regulator Replacement — What's Involved
- Regulator located (frame-mounted, typically right side)
- Wiring disconnected and connector inspected for corrosion
- Old regulator removed
- New regulator mounted with good airflow — overheating is the primary cause of regulator failure
- Wiring reconnected with clean, corrosion-free connections
- Output verified at 13.5–14.5V
