The braking system is the only thing between you and a collision, and worn pads reduce stopping power progressively — often so gradually that riders don't notice the degradation until it matters most. We recommend visual pad inspection every 10,000 km and replacement before pads reach the wear indicator bars.
What's Included
- Caliper removal from mounting bracket
- Old pads removed and pad thickness documented
- Caliper pistons retracted (master cylinder reservoir opened first)
- Rotor thickness and surface condition checked
- Caliper sliding pins inspected and lubricated
- New pads installed with correct orientation
- Caliper reinstalled and torqued to spec (typically 28–38 ft-lbs)
- Brake lever pumped 15+ times to seat pads before moving bike
- Brake test
How to Tell When Pads Are Due
Visual inspection through the caliper window shows remaining pad thickness. Replace when under 3mm — don't wait for the wear indicator (which means you're at the minimum). Squealing or grinding during braking are audible warnings: squealing means the wear indicator is contacting the rotor; grinding means the pad backing is contacting the rotor directly and you must stop riding immediately.
