Book This Service(902) 755-6532The primary chaincase service is a critical but often overlooked part of Big Twin Harley-Davidson maintenance. The primary houses your engine-to-clutch chain, the compensating sprocket, the clutch assembly, and the chain tensioner shoe — all bathed in their own dedicated lubricant. Skipping primary service leads to premature chain, sprocket, and clutch wear.
What's Included
- Derby cover removal for access and visual clutch inspection
- Primary oil drain — allow full drainage
- Chain slack measurement — should be 5/8" to 7/8" free play at tightest point
- Chain adjustment if out of spec
- Primary drain plug reinstalled with fresh sealing washer
- Refill with Harley Formula+ or equivalent primary lubricant (approx. 32 oz)
- Derby cover reinstalled
Primary Oil Interval
Every 10,000–16,000 km depending on model, or annually. Primary oil doesn't get as dirty as engine oil but it does break down and can hold metallic wear particles. The drain plug is magnetic on some models — checking it for metallic buildup tells you about chain and sprocket wear rates. A clean magnet means healthy components; heavy metallic paste means something is wearing excessively.
