Book This Service(902) 755-6532The cam chain tensioner upgrade is the single most important proactive maintenance you can perform on a Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engine. The factory shoe-style tensioners — used on TC88 and many TC96 engines — are a known wear item that can fail catastrophically if left unaddressed. Upgrading to hydraulic tensioners eliminates the failure mode entirely and is the same design Harley eventually moved to on later Twin Cams.

Which Bikes Need This?
Any TC88 (1999–2006) should be considered high priority regardless of mileage — these engines have the original shoe design with the most wear potential. TC96 engines from 2007–2009 also commonly have shoe tensioners depending on build date. TC96 from 2010+ and all TC103 engines may already have hydraulic tensioners — we verify before proceeding.
The classic symptom is a metallic rattle from the right side of the engine on cold startup that clears as the engine warms. If you're hearing this — don't wait. A broken tensioner shoe can cause sudden cam timing loss, bent pushrods, or a destroyed cam support plate.
Upgrade Options
Hydraulic conversion (recommended): Same principle as Harley's own later design. Oil pressure maintains tension automatically. No further adjustment or replacement needed.
Gear drive conversion: Eliminates chains entirely. Adds a distinct mechanical whine but is virtually indestructible. Overkill for most street bikes but excellent for high-mileage tourers.
