Compensating Sprocket Replacement

The compensating sprocket is the rubber-cushioned drive component that sits between your engine's crankshaft and the primary chain. When its rubber dampers wear out, you get the infamous Twin Cam clunk — that distinct thud when you roll on or off the throttle at low speed. It's one of the most common symptoms on high-mileage Twin Cams and is completely fixable with a proper replacement.

What's Included

• Primary oil drain
• Outer primary cover removal
• Primary chain removal for access
• Worn compensating sprocket removed (left-hand thread nut — requires correct tooling)
• Crankshaft taper inspection and cleaning
• New compensator installed and retention nut torqued to 150–165 ft-lbs
• Primary reassembly with fresh gasket/o-ring
• Fresh primary oil fill

Symptoms of a Worn Compensator

• Clunk or thud when rolling on the throttle from a stop
• Rattle or noise on cold startup
• Rough, jerky feel at low speed in traffic
• Sound originates from the left (primary) side of the engine

OEM vs. Solid Upgrade

OEM replacement: Same rubber-damper design as original. Will last another 60,000–80,000+ km with proper primary oil maintenance. Correct for most applications.

Solid compensator (Carlini, Feuling): Eliminates rubber altogether with a precision mechanical design. Slightly more vibration transmitted but never wears out. Recommended for high-mileage touring bikes or those who want a permanent solution.

Important: The retention nut on the compensating sprocket is left-hand threaded. Applying torque in the wrong direction strips the crankshaft threads — a catastrophic mistake. Our shop uses the proper holding tool and correct procedure on every compensator job.
