Ski-Doo Pre-Season Checklist: Get Your Sled Ready Before First Snow
A practical pre-season checklist for Ski-Doo and other snowmobiles, covering everything that fails after a summer in storage — before the first good snowfall catches you unprepared.
Every fall, the same issues show up on sleds that sat all summer: dead batteries, gummed-up carburetors, and belts that dry-rotted in storage. Running through this pre-season checklist before the first good snowfall means your Ski-Doo is ready to ride the moment conditions are right, instead of sitting in the shop during the best week of the season.
Battery and Electrical
- Charge the battery fully and load test it — a battery that reads fine at rest can still fail under cranking load
- Clean corrosion from terminals and connections
- Check all lights, gauges, and heated grips function correctly
Fuel System
- Drain old fuel if stabilizer wasn't used at spring shutdown
- Inspect fuel lines for cracking or hardening
- Fresh fuel filter if due
- Carbureted models: check for stale-fuel varnish in the float bowls
Drive System
- Inspect drive belt for dry rot, cracking, or glazing from storage
- Check clutch alignment and belt deflection
- Verify chaincase oil level
Track and Suspension
- Check track tension and alignment — tension may have relaxed or shifted over the off-season
- Inspect hyfax (slide) wear before the season, not after a trail ruins them further
- Check rear suspension shocks for leaks and pivot bushings for play
Brakes and Safety
- Brake fluid level and pad/disc condition
- Emergency tether/kill switch function
- Headlight and taillight operation for early-morning or dusk rides
The Test Start
Once everything above checks out, a full test start and warm-up reveals anything the visual inspection missed — unusual noises, smoke, rough idle, or an engine that won't hold RPM. This is the point where a small issue is caught in the shop instead of on a remote trail with no cell signal.
Book Early
The best time to book pre-season prep is September or October — well before the first real snowfall triggers a rush of last-minute bookings. Sleds prepped in advance are the ones out on the trail on day one of the season, not the ones waiting for a shop appointment while the snow is perfect.
