Harley-Davidson Diagnostic Trouble Codes: A Rider's Guide

Modern Harley-Davidson motorcycles store diagnostic trouble codes that point directly to system faults. Here's how to retrieve codes, what the most common ones mean, and when to seek professional diagnosis.

Since Harley-Davidson introduced Electronic Fuel Injection in 1995, the motorcycles have included on-board diagnostic capability — a system that monitors engine sensors, detects faults, and stores Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the Engine Control Module memory. Understanding how to access these codes and what they mean can save you hundreds of dollars in diagnostic labor and help you have an informed conversation with your service shop.

How to Retrieve Diagnostic Codes Without a Scan Tool

Many Harley-Davidson models allow basic code retrieval using only the handlebar switches — no tools required. The procedure varies slightly by year and model, but the most common method:

2004+ Big Twins and Sportsters

  1. Turn the ignition key to OFF.
  2. Put the fuel cap in the "off" position (on carb'd models).
  3. Press and hold both the odometer reset button and the turn signal cancel button simultaneously.
  4. While holding both buttons, turn the ignition key to ACC (first position, before ON).
  5. Release the buttons when "diAG" or "Codes" appears in the odometer/speedo display.
  6. Use the odometer button to cycle through stored codes.

The codes will display as "Pxx-xx" or "Bxx-xx" format. Write down all codes before clearing them.

Pre-2004 Models

Earlier EFI Harleys use a different retrieval procedure involving turn signal module (TSSM) blink codes rather than a digital display. The procedure is year-specific — consult the service manual for your model.

Modern Models (2014+) — Harley HOGS/HDOS

Late-model Harleys require the Harley-Davidson Digital Technician II or compatible scan tool for full code access. The keypad retrieval method may still work for basic engine codes but won't access ABS, TSSM, or instrument cluster modules separately.

Code Categories

Harley codes follow a structure similar to automotive OBD-II but with specific prefixes:

  • P-codes (Powertrain): Engine and transmission related — P0xxx, P1xxx
  • B-codes (Body): Security and body electronics — B-codes
  • U-codes (Network): Communication faults between modules — U-codes

Most Common Harley Diagnostic Codes and Their Meaning

P0107 / P0108 — MAP Sensor Fault

The Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor measures intake vacuum, which the ECM uses to calculate engine load and fuel delivery. P0107 = signal too low (open circuit or failed sensor); P0108 = signal too high. Symptoms include rough idle, poor fuel economy, and hesitation. MAP sensors are a common failure point on older EFI Harleys — replacement is straightforward.

P0112 / P0113 — Intake Air Temperature Fault

The IAT sensor measures the temperature of incoming air. Faults here cause the ECM to default to a fixed air temperature value, affecting fuel delivery accuracy. Often presents as hard cold starting or poor fuel economy in temperature extremes.

P0562 — Battery Voltage Low

The ECM is seeing battery voltage below 11.5V. The most common cause is a weak battery or charging system fault. This code often triggers in conjunction with others because low voltage causes multiple secondary faults. Fix the charging/battery issue first and see which other codes clear on their own.

P1003 / P1004 — Throttle Position Sensor

The TPS monitors throttle plate position. Failures cause hesitation, erratic idle, or the bike going into "limp mode" (reduced power). The TPS on most Harleys is not individually adjustable — the entire throttle body assembly requires replacement when the TPS fails.

P0374 — Crank Position Sensor

The crank position sensor (also called the cam position or ignition module pickup) sends engine RPM and position signals to the ECM. A failing crank sensor causes intermittent stumbling, stalling, or no-start conditions that are often temperature-related (the sensor works when cold but fails when hot). This is a common failure on Twin Cam bikes.

B1121/B1122 — Front/Rear Wheel Speed Sensor (ABS Models)

On ABS-equipped Harleys, wheel speed sensor faults trigger the ABS warning light and disable ABS function (the brakes still work mechanically, just without ABS). Common causes: a wheel speed sensor or tone ring damaged by road debris, or a broken sensor wire from fatigue cracking.

P0374 — Security/TSSM Fault

Various TSSM (Turn Signal Security Module) codes relate to the alarm and anti-theft system. A common situation is a no-start caused by a security arm/disarm issue rather than a mechanical fault. If you have a security code and the bike won't start, check your key fob battery first.

Clearing Codes

Most codes can be cleared through the same switch procedure used to retrieve them — cycle to the end of the code list and there's usually a "CL" option to clear. However: clearing codes without fixing the underlying fault just hides the problem temporarily. The fault will return and the code will be stored again.

Some codes — particularly ABS and security codes — require a scan tool to clear completely and may not respond to the manual keypad clear method.

When to Seek Professional Diagnosis

The DIY code retrieval gives you a starting point, not necessarily the final answer. A code indicates a fault in a circuit or system — not necessarily a failed component. For example, P0107 (MAP sensor low) could mean:

  • A failed MAP sensor (replace sensor)
  • A broken wire to the MAP sensor (repair wiring)
  • A damaged ECM connector pin (repair connector)
  • A failed ECM (rare, but possible)
